Intouchables

A lot of movies and their context depends on our reactions. After all, the other day I just had a conversation about someone who didn’t like Django Unchained; commenting on performances and storylines that I thought worked really well. I have also found people who have found it offensive or just a shoddy piece of filmmaking. Sometimes, it is just a matter of opinion and there are some movies that absolutely polarise. In this case, with The Intouchables have had different reactions. In France,...

The Eye

I speak a lot of trash about re-makes. Incidentally, a lot of movies now and forever will be re-makes and I just have to accept that. But what irks me most is the re-makes of previously great movies that people don’t think will work well into audiences now. Potiche in French means a decorative vase. It causes no fuss to anyone and sits prettily on the shelf as days go buy. It has no opinion on life or people. If someone shouts in front of it, it sits silent and pretty. If someone goes and insults them, it pays no bother and sits silent and pretty. Potiche...

El Topo

Here is a movie that has the backing of many, directors, famous musicians and comedians.. Inspiration behind Genesis album The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, El Topo has been acclaimed by many including The Mighty Boosh and David Lynch. Truly kicking off the midnight movie phenomenon and setting off a wave of cult movies, this heavy movie is still powerful today. Without John Lennon and the Beatles on board it would never have received it’s audiences it did. And without El Topo, we would never...

Wither

When The Evil Dead came out in 1981 not only did Sam Raimi’s masterpiece become one of the biggest horror movies of all time but it revolutionised the perfect combination between horror and comedy. This year, The Evil Dead remake came bounding to our screens this year and, well, predictably it didn’t hit the mark. While it made waves with the brutality and the special effects, it did what every remake horror movie did and stripped away the humour, making it cold and stark. Enter Sweden with...
